Kel O'Neill is an Emmy-nominated filmmaker who works at the intersection of documentary, art and technology. He is the winner of the inaugural Tim Hetherington Visionary Award. From 2010 to 2013, Kel traveled more than 200,000 kilometers through ten countries to film the immersive documentary project "Empire" (IDFA 2012, NYFF 2013), which won top prize at PBS's 2nd POV Hackathon in 2013 and was presented as part of the SXSW Digital Domain program in 2014. In September 2014 the Emmy Award-winning documentary show POV acquired the interactive version of "Empire."
Kel was a participant in the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s 2013 Artists Academy, and his projects have received grants and support from such organizations as the European Cultural Foundation, The National Archives of the Netherlands, and the NEA. Before becoming a filmmaker, Kel appeared as an actor in films that won awards at the Sundance, Venice and Edinburgh Film Festivals. He is the founder and organizer of Storycode Los Angeles, the LA chapter of the continent-spanning community for immersive and transmedia storytellers.
